Some of you may be aware that I recently qualified as a British Cycling Accredited Marshal (AMS). This allows me to legally stop traffic when volunteering to assist at British Cycling approved road races. Without AMS marshals there is a distinct possibility that many road races in this area may have to stop, as the local Police now insist on having AMS marshals present, especially at road junctions. It is a fantastic way to give something back to cycling and ensure that those adventurous members who partake in such events (Alex, Ross etc.) can continue to do so.
So what does it entail and what is required to become a AMS?
- Spend 1 hour reading through the role of the AMS and passing a simple online test
- Attend a 3-4 hour training course, usually held at the Penshurst Off Road Cycling track
- Commit to marshaling at 5 British Cycling approved events in a 12 month period
